At first, the building was built by Kingo Tatsuno and Yasushi Kataoka as Kyusyu branch office of Nippon Life Insurance Company in 1909.
The roof is decorated with a turret and windows with a dome in the center.
The exterior walls dressed with white granite bands over red bricks add gorgeous touch to the urban scenery.
This style is called "Tatsuno Style" which is an application of Queen Anne that came into fashion in 19th century. This building is a good example of the characteristics of that style. He designed many famous buildings such as Tokyo Station, the head office of the Bank of Japan and so on.
Next, Fukuoka City purchased the building after the building was recognized as an important cultural asset in 1969.
It was used as a Historical Museum from 1972 to 1990.
Finally, the building was opened to the public as Fukuoka City Akarenga Cultural Center in 1994 after restoring. The conference rooms on the second floor are classical and are suitable for ladies and gentlemen.
It is a land mark as well as a sightseeing spot in Tenjin area.
