The first thing you will notice when you come to Beppu hot springs is the white steam clouds rising all around.

Beppu is the number one hot spring area in western Japan. It is proud of being the richest hot spring sources and having the greatest variety of hot springs in Japan. In fact, it features 10 out of the 11 general recognized types of hot water composites.
The eruption of hot spring water is second only to the Yellowstone National Park in USA.

The hot springs in Beppu City are called "Beppu Hatto " which consists of 8 hot spring districts. They are Beppu, Hamawaki, Kankaiji, Horita, Kannawa, Myouban, Kamegawa and Shibaseki.

There are 8 famous hells in the city. Six of them such as Umi, Oniishi-Bozu, Yama, Kamado, Oniyama and Shiraike are in Kannawa district.
The district is the center of " Beppu Hells Tour " by sightseeing bus. The bus tour with its young girl bus guides started for the first time in 1928.

In Kannawa district, you can try unique "jigoku-mushi " style cooking. The cooking uses the high temperature of hot spring steam to cook vegetables, meat, and fish.

Additionally, many events and festivals are held throughout the year such as Beppu Hatto Festival, Argerich Music Festival and so on.

It is very easy to get to Beppu either by train, highway bus, ferry or airplane.
