At festivals over the country, you can see many giant decorated floats or portable shrines (Mikoshi) snaking along the streets wheeled or carried by the people in Happi (kimono style short) coats. Depending on the area and the festival, they can be also called Hoko, Yama or Danjiri.

In Fukuoka Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival in July is very famous, attracting a great many tourists every year.




Dashi (floats) and Mikoshi (Portable shrines) are considered as vehicles for the gods. Gods usually stay in the shrines, but at festivals, they on the Mikoshi or Dashi come out to see you. So, don't miss the good chance to see Gods.




  2 kinds of Dashi

Dashi in Japanese has two different tastes and meanings. One is Floats. The other Dashi is Soup stock or base of taste for Japanese food. In Fukuoka there are many delicious foods with Dashi. Why not enjoy 2 kinds of Dashi in Fukuoka?
