This shrine was removed from Imaizumi to Tenjin and was renamed from Sugatami Tenjin Shrine to Suikyo Tenmangu Shrine by Nagamasa Kuroda, first feudal lord of Fukuoka clan, in 1612.

He removed the shrine here to protect Fukuoka Castle from evils that invade from northeast. The shrine is dedicated to Michizane Sugawara, who landed in Hakata on his way to Dazaifu in 901.
The name of "Tenjin" originates from the movement of this shrine.

The framed characters "Tenmangu" on the main Torii, shrine gate, was written by Kouki Hirota, ex-prime minister, when he was an elementary school student.

There is a big avocado tree in the precinct and it bears fruit in the fall.

The shrine is a power spot in the heart of Tenjin area and is very easy of access.
